Limits (For Parshat Devarim)

When the people come near to the land of Moav, God warns the people to not enter battle with Moav.

For I will not give you of that nation’s land, God says.

I have already given it to the children of that nation’s ancestor, Lot.

This warning comes before God gives the Israelites victory over the Kingdom of Sichon, and over the Kingdom of Bashan, and over the Seven Kingdoms of the land of Canaan.

Before great conquest, God warns the people Israel to not conquer.

Even before we take, God demands that we ask: What will God not let me take?

We must know that there are limits.
