When leaders depart from
this world, what do we do?
i
Aaron is the first High Priest.
He is the one to lead Israel into a new mode of spiritual life.
Aaron dies.
*
Then the Canaanites attack Israel, and Canaan takes prisoners.
And Israel vowed a vow to HaShem.
And HaShem hearkened to the voice of Israel
And HaShem delivered the Canaanites to Israel.
ii
If the leader is the one who will unify us around God— what do we do when he is gone?
*
When the leader is gone, we must become him.
We must gather, together, to God, ourselves:
Israel—the
nation as one, the nation alone, from its heart, its conviction—vowed a vow to HaShem.
All Israel, together.
iii
If this unity will have seeped into our hearts—if it is
strong enough to bring us to vow a vow—then
the teaching of the leader has grown within us.
If this is so, then the leader has raised his children into a nation.
And our joining together without him is his final act of leadership.
