A view
of wealth
i
Moses sends men to spy the Land and to bring back fruit.
The spies go. They bring back a branch with… a cluster of grapes.
The grapes are enormous.
*
The spies say: the Land is good—this is its fruit.
But the inhabitants are fierce, we cannot survive against
them.
The people are frightened.
They turn from the Land that God has promised them.
They lack faith in God’s help.
God says: this generation will not enter the Land.
ii
Later, a man gathers
wood on the Sabbath.
The people ask Moses what they should do. Moses asks God.
God tells Moses what this man’s punishment will be; the
people carry the punishment out.
iii
Fruit demands a choice of faith.
A person can say: A
man grew this fruit.
Or a person can say: A man grew this fruit with the help
of God.
*
The man gathers wood
with no fruit, and the people seek God.
But the spies carry a branch
with fruit, and the people lose faith in God.
They see fruit, and do not think of God’s help. They think
of the strength of men.
That is why they are not
ready to enter God’s Land.
