How the Torah ends
i
Moses is about to die.
God shows Moses the regions of the Land from far off: Dan, Naftali, Efryaim, Menashe, Yehuda.
These regions are named for the tribes of Israel that will live there, when God fulfills His promise to give the Land to the people Israel.
*
The Torah call these regions by these names—though when Moses is about to die, Israel has yet to enter the Land.
ii
Moses dies.
And the prophet Joshua leads Israel.
He will take Israel into the Land.
The Torah says: the Children of Israel hearkened to Joshua.
*
But if the people have yet to enter the Land, the people have yet to hearken to Joshua who will lead them there.
iii
In the Five Books of Torah, we do not see God fulfill His promise.
We do not see Israel hearken to the prophet of God.
But at the conclusion of the Five Books of Torah, these things that have yet to happen are treated as certainties.
*
It is left up to God to make these certainties true.
It is left up to Israel to make these certainties true.
That is the conclusion of the Torah.
